The Environmental Microscope Laboratory (EML) provides elemental and molecular analysis to identify unknown materials in tissues, fluids, and other matrices submitted by pathology departments at Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Treatment Facilities for interpretation by the Environmental Pathology sub-specialty. The laboratory uses scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify or characterize unknown chemical substances. These included plastics, metals fragments, therapeutic drugs, and inhaled particles.

The MT/MLS would be operating and maintaining the SEM-EDS and FT-IR in accordance with the published standard operating procedures (SOPs) and manufacturer guidance.
